Breed and variety

Penn State Extension describes a breed as a group sharing physical features that are reproduced in its offspring. A variety is a subdivision distinguished by features such as feather colour, pattern, or comb type.

Size classification

Bantam and large fowl indicate size groupings. They do not replace the breed name. Some bantams have larger counterparts; others are true bantams without an equivalent large form.

Strain and bloodline

A line name is used to describe a particular breeding family or ancestry claim. It should not automatically be presented as an officially recognised breed. Check the relevant breed registry and the breeder’s records separately.

Read standards in context

The American Poultry Association lists accepted breeds and varieties for its own exhibition system. Recognition in one system does not establish universal recognition or prove the identity of an individual bird.
